Company History

GeneSeek started operations in 1998 in a 550 square foot laboratory space, at the Technology Development Center (incubator) of the University of Nebraska Technology Park. The company was founded by Abe Oommen and Daniel Pomp, and the first employee was a part-time student through UNL's Kauffman Entrepreneur Internship Program.

With a pipettor donated by the local Fisher Scientific Sales rep, a thermal cycler purchased on a personal credit card and a LI-COR sequencer leased on a monthly payment plan, the company started providing genomic services to the agribusiness community. Within three years, the company had 8 full time employees and moved to a custom built, state of the art 3,000 square foot laboratory within the Tech Park. In 2005, GeneSeek had grown to 15 full time employees and added more space to accommodate our growing Clinical Diagnostics business.

The years 2006 and 2007 marked three landmarks for GeneSeek. First, we solicited and received our first round of external funding from two institutional investors. This is now enabling a new phase of growth, including expansion into new instrumentation development for diagnostics, and development of services in therapeutics and drug discovery. Second, we submitted, and were awarded, our first Federally funded grants to develop new, R&D-based products. And third, we have truly become a global company with the opening of our new satellite offices/labs in Europe (Nottingham, UK) and Asia (Hyderabad, India).

Today, GeneSeek offers a well-rounded and interconnected portfolio of expertise to our clients, and we are in a position to expand our business in new areas of technology while remaining at the forefront of innovation.
